THE IDEA BEHIND THE PROJECT

How Le Dimore di Poggio Ferrato were born

"When I first approached the restoration plan in Poggio Ferrato, I set off on a journey through the history that has marked this territory over the centuries, as in most of the Italian territory. A history that a project like this must in part preserve and pass on, and in part write.

The borghi - villages lying on the gentle profiles of the Oltrepò Pavese land invite you to slow down, to quietly observe woods, vineyards and to communicate with humans and nature."

- Daniele Rotondo

History today is handed down through the buildings that have remained and that human care has managed to save. Architectural signs that tell us about majestic constructions, urban planning organizations that bring us back to ancient medieval "borgate".

The Oltrepò Pavese is dotted with these "borghi" (villages) and almost all of them have their identification through the signs of their towers: either towers of fortresses and defense bastions or towers of churches and ecclesiastical sites. Around Poggio Ferrato there are two of the most significant examples of fortifications attributable to the medieval period: "the Castle of Zavattarello" and "the Castle of Oramala".

The restoration plan recovered the former "Castelli" property located in the upper part of the ancient borgo of Poggio Ferrato (Ponte Nizza - PV), facing north towards the hills of San Albano.

The property is made of three stone and/or brick buildings, although only traces of one of these can be glimpsed as it was recently reduced to a ruin in a state of complete decay. If seen from below with its buttress, the body entirely of stone reminds us of the profiles of the towers mentioned above. The adjacent curtain and the head church are urban traces of an old medieval village.

Le Dimore

With this project, past history is recovered but also a history of contemporary architecture is written.

A corner of a dilapidated town is revived and an ancient urban layout is strengthened.

But above all, to the future inhabitants of Le Dimore will be given the pleasure and privilege of exclusive sensations given by the undulating profiles of the hills of this astonishing land.
